The driver heads east through the Blackwall Tunnel, down the A2 to the M25 and round to the M23. It avoids central London completely, which makes it more predictable than going through the City.
By rail you would take the Jubilee line to London Bridge and then Thameslink or Southern to Gatwick. It is manageable with a briefcase but awkward with suitcases.
By public transport: Jubilee line to London Bridge, then Thameslink or Southern, about 55–75 min. The catch is a change at London Bridge and busy trains with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 60 min, or 95 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Canary Wharf (E14) the route runs through the Blackwall Tunnel to the A2 and M25, then the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and M25 to the A2 and back through the Blackwall Tunnel. The Blackwall Tunnel is the main pinch point in the morning and early evening. For weekday flights we allow the full 95 minutes and may use the Rotherhithe Tunnel if the Blackwall is jammed.
