Cruise lines sail from Dover; their passengers, increasingly, sleep in Canterbury the night before. A cathedral evening, a proper dinner, and a 25-minute run to the berth after breakfast beats any airport-morning scramble — and this desk has quietly become part of that routine.

Gatwick, for most journeys. It is around 75 miles via the M20 and the M25's southern arc — typically 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 50 — with no Thames crossing and the widest choice of holiday routes. Heathrow (roughly 88 miles, 1h30–2h) is the long-haul answer. London City wins on pure distance for business flights, while Stansted and Luton involve the Dartford Crossing and get quoted against its live state. Is there a train from Canterbury to Gatwick or Heathrow?

Not a direct one, to either — or to any airport at all. Canterbury's rail crown jewel is the high-speed line to St Pancras, about 54 minutes and roughly 25 direct trains a day, and for a plain London trip we will genuinely tell you to take it. How to choose. Public transport wins on price for one traveller with hand luggage at 10am. A taxi usually wins when there are two or more of you (one fare for the car, not per person), when you have hold bags or a pushchair, for flights before the first train arrives or landings after the last one leaves, and when a change of train or a station without lifts would be a problem.
