From Hendon the M1 takes you straight to the M25, and the driver runs clockwise round the west side to the M23. When the M25 is heavy, central London can be quicker, and the driver decides on the day.
By train it is Thameslink from Hendon station, which runs through central London to Gatwick. It is direct, but a long ride with luggage.

The catch is two or three changes and a cross-London transfer with cases. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 70 min, or 105 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Hendon (NW4) the route runs the M1 to the M25 and clockwise round the west to the M23, or through central London. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows M23 north and the M25 anticlockwise to the M1 and Hendon. That is about 40 miles: reckon 70 min off-peak and 105 min when the M25 between junctions 16 and 7 is busy.
