The Gatwick Problem Set

---

## What one runway does to everything around it

LGW / 01

### The domino runway

Up to 55 movements an hour ride one strip of tarmac. A single morning fog delay ripples through the entire day's schedule — which is why afternoon Gatwick departures inherit risk from breakfast-time weather, and why we watch the airport's whole day, not just your flight.

LGW / 02

### Terminal musical chairs

North or South is decided by airline allocation that changes with commercial deals, not geography. The traveller who "always flies from South" is one reshuffle away from a sprint. We verify against the airline's live listing the morning of travel — never against habit.

LGW / 03

### One road in, one road out

The M23 is Gatwick's aorta; the A23 its collateral vein. An incident between J8 of the M25 and the airport spur affects essentially every road passenger at once. Our routing holds fallbacks through Redhill and the Surrey lanes for the days the artery clots.

LGW / 04

### The dawn Caribbean wave

Long-haul from the Caribbean and North America lands in an early-morning cluster, dropping several widebodies of tired passengers onto border control at once. If you're on that wave, your included waiting hour was designed for you personally.

LGW / 05

### Leisure-heavy luggage

Gatwick's mix skews holiday: two-week cases, golf trips, ski charters, cruise connections to the south coast. Boot-space arithmetic matters more here than at any business airport — declare honestly and the vehicle fits first time.

LGW / 06

### The Brighton corridor

Uniquely among London airports, Gatwick's catchment pulls hard from the south — Brighton, Hove, Worthing and the Sussex coast treat it as their local. Half our LGW work never touches London at all, and our south-facing route knowledge shows it.

Field Guide

---

## North and South, from the driver's seat

N

#### North Terminal — The Purpose-Built One

The younger sibling: a large easyJet operation alongside a rotating cast of leisure and long-haul names. Cleaner sightlines in arrivals, a single main exit stream, and a forecourt approach that behaves predictably. From the road it's the further of the two — the internal airport loop adds a few minutes our timings already contain.

ARRIVALS: SINGLE EXIT STREAM · APPROACH: INNER LOOP ROAD
S

#### South Terminal — The Original

Gatwick's first face, wearing decades of extensions — and crucially, the terminal fused to the railway station, which makes its landside concourse the busiest crossroads on site. Arrivals here release into heavier ambient crowds; our drivers position boards with that flow in mind, slightly back from the crush where you can actually read them.

ARRIVALS: BUSY CONCOURSE · STATION-SIDE CROWDS CONSTANT
**Wrong terminal at 05:40?** Breathe. The inter-terminal shuttle runs continuously, free, taking a couple of minutes plus walking. It's a fixable mistake — but it's also ten minutes you didn't budget, which is why we fix it before it happens by checking your airline's allocation against the live roster, not last summer's memory.

The Honest Numbers

---

## Gatwick journey times, both directions of its double life

Gatwick serves two worlds — London to its north, the Sussex coast to its south. Ranges below reflect normal conditions; peak means weekday 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–19:00, plus summer Saturdays, which at LGW are a season unto themselves.

| Route | Off-peak | Peak reality | Dispatcher's margin note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Victoria / Westminster | 55–70 min | 80–105 min | The A23 through Streatham is the honest bottleneck |
| The City / Bank | 60–80 min | 90–115 min | Cross-river routing chosen live, bridge by bridge |
| Canary Wharf | 60–80 min | 90–120 min | Blackwall vs. Silvertown decision made in-motion |
| Croydon | 25–35 min | 40–60 min | Gatwick's true commuter belt; school-run sensitive |
| Brighton & Hove | 30–40 min | 45–70 min | Southbound summer Fridays deserve their own weather forecast |
| Tunbridge Wells / Kent | 40–55 min | 60–80 min | A264 corridor; pleasant run outside commuter pulses |
| Guildford / Surrey | 35–50 min | 55–75 min | M25 J8–J10 stretch is the variable to respect |
| Heathrow (inter-airport) | 60–75 min | 90–120 min | See our 4-hour connection doctrine — non-negotiable |
| Dover cruise terminals | 75–95 min | 110–140 min | Sailing-day runs carry cruise-deadline buffers as standard |
| Southampton berths | 80–100 min | 2 hrs + | M27 approach timed against embarkation windows |

## The Gatwick collection, refined by repetition

### Our side of the glass

- **Terminal locked, then re-locked:** Verified at booking, verified again on the day. Gatwick's allocation churn is the single biggest cause of botched pickups by casual operators — and the easiest one to engineer away.
- **Runway-day awareness:** Because one runway means cascading delays, dispatch monitors Gatwick's whole operational picture. If the airport is running 40 minutes behind by lunchtime, your evening pickup already knows.
- **Short-stay positioning:** Drivers park in the terminal's short-stay levels and meet you in the greeting zone with a printed board — the method Gatwick's own layout rewards, with the parking band absorbed into your fixed fare.

### Your side of the glass

- **South Terminal? Expect crowds before customs ends:** The station-side concourse throngs at all hours. Your driver's board will be positioned just beyond the densest flow — walk ten metres past the barrier before scanning.
- **Holiday luggage, declared honestly:** Two weeks of family cases plus duty-free plus the airport-bought inflatable flamingo — tell the booking form the truth and the boot will tell you none back.
- **Wobble protocol:** Any confusion, one WhatsApp to [+44 20 8888 9988](https://wa.me/442088889988). A dispatcher with your live booking beats twenty minutes of hopeful wandering, every time.

SUMMER SATURDAYS
Changeover day for half of Europe's package holidays. Terminal forecourts, security and the M23 all peak together, 04:00–11:00. We open extra dawn capacity for it — book the moment your flights confirm.

THE 06:00 BANK
Gatwick's first departure wave is enormous and leisure-heavy. Kerb arrival ~2.5 hours ahead is our standard counsel for it; quieter mid-afternoon departures can run leaner.

CARIBBEAN DAWN
Overnight widebodies land 05:00–07:30. Immigration surges, carousels labour, and your waiting hour — measured from actual touchdown — quietly handles all of it.

LAST-WAVE ARRIVALS
Post-22:30 landings meet dwindling rail options southbound and northbound alike. Pre-booked collection converts a stranded midnight into a warm back seat. This is our core trade.

The LGW Clientele

## Four Gatwick journeys stitched into our week

RUN / A

### The Brighton reverse-commute

Coast dwellers who fly LGW precisely because London isn't in the equation. Thirty-odd minutes door to departures on a kind day — a transfer so civilised it barely counts as travel. We keep the A23's moods memorised so they never have to.

RUN / B

### The package-holiday family, 04:30

Summer Saturday, first wave, four cases and two half-asleep children. The MPV arrives with child seats pre-fitted, the driver already knows which terminal this year's charter uses, and the kerb drop lands metres from the right doors. Chaos, declined.

RUN / C

### The ski charter connection

Winter LGW fills with Alps-bound traffic hauling equipment that laughs at saloon boots. Fold-flat estates and MPVs, board bags declared in advance, and departure timings tuned to the seasonal Saturday crush. Gear travels like a passenger, not a problem.

RUN / D

### The Dover cruise pipeline

Gatwick is the natural airport for Dover sailings, and we are the natural bridge — trunk-scale luggage capacity, embarkation-deadline scheduling, and a route east that dodges the Operation Brock lorry-stack days the Kent coast occasionally throws.

## Gatwick Express, Southern or Thameslink, or a car?

Visitors often ask which Gatwick train to take and whether the Express is worth the extra. Journey times are similar, so the real question is where each one stops.

- **Gatwick Express** runs to Victoria.
- **Southern** trains mostly run to Victoria too, often for less.
- **Thameslink** runs through London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon and St Pancras, which suits the City, King's Cross and Bloomsbury.

Whichever you pick, you arrive at a big terminus and still need to reach your hotel with your bags.

A car takes you from the terminal to the door. Our fares are per car, with Gatwick parking and charges included, so for a couple or family the comparison is several rail fares plus an onward taxi against one fixed price.

### Q: Which Gatwick train goes to St Pancras?

**A:** Thameslink. It also serves London Bridge, Blackfriars and Farringdon. The Gatwick Express goes to Victoria.

---

## Tapping in at Gatwick, and why the fares add up {#pricing}

Visitors often ask whether they can tap a bank card at Gatwick and why the fare seems high. Contactless and Oyster pay-as-you-go work at Gatwick, but the journey sits outside the usual TfL daily caps, so you pay the full single fare for that trip.

A few things catch people out:

- The fare depends on the train company and the time of day.
- Each traveller needs their own card or phone.
- Your onward Tube or taxi from Victoria or London Bridge is extra.

For one person with a small case, rail is fine. For three or four people with luggage, the total climbs quickly. Our fares are per car, not per seat, with Gatwick charges and parking already included, so it is worth comparing the family total against one fixed price.

### Q: Does the TfL daily cap cover the train from Gatwick?

**A:** No. Gatwick journeys are outside the standard TfL caps, so each person pays the single fare for that trip.

## Gatwick questions, answered properly

How do I know if I fly from North or South Terminal?
You don't need to — that's our job. Terminal allocation at Gatwick follows commercial agreements that shift regularly, so we resolve it from your flight number against the airline's live listing shortly before travel. If you're curious anyway, your airline's website shows the current assignment; just don't trust a screenshot from last year's trip.

Morning fog delayed everything at Gatwick — is my afternoon pickup affected?
Possibly, and we'll know before you do. One runway means delays cascade through the day, so dispatch tracks Gatwick's overall punctuality alongside your specific flight. If your arrival drifts, your driver's dispatch drifts with it automatically — no calls needed, no waiting charges triggered.

I'm heading south to Brighton, not into London — do you cover that?
Enthusiastically. The Sussex coast is half of Gatwick's gravitational field and a substantial share of our LGW work — Brighton, Hove, Worthing, Eastbourne, the lot. Southbound runs are often quicker and calmer than anything London-facing, and priced with the same fixed-fare discipline.

What's the realistic buffer for a Gatwick–Heathrow connection?
Our dispatch desk holds a hard floor of four hours between scheduled landing and onward departure — three if your bags are checked through. The drive alone can run 60–120 minutes depending on the M25's mood; the rest is immigration, baggage and check-in insurance. Full connection doctrine lives on the [hub page](https://getlondontransfer.co.uk/airport-transfers.html#connections).

We're flying out on a summer Saturday — anything we should do differently?
Two things. Book your transfer as early as humanly possible — dawn slots on changeover Saturdays genuinely sell out. And accept our slightly earlier suggested pickup without negotiation: the extra margin covers a terminal, a motorway and a security hall all peaking simultaneously. Arriving twenty minutes "too early" at Gatwick in August has never once been regretted.

Do you do late-night Gatwick collections after the last train?
They're a house speciality. Post-23:00 arrivals meet a thinning rail timetable in both directions, which is exactly when a pre-booked, flight-tracked car proves its worth. Driver details reach you before you fly; the car is positioned against your actual landing time; the fare was fixed days earlier and doesn't know what midnight means.

Is the Gatwick drop-off charge included in the fare?
Yes. Gatwick currently charges £10 to use its terminal drop-off zones. That charge, and car park fees when we collect you, are already in your fixed fare, so there is nothing extra to pay on the day.

Tipping: 10–12.5% service is often added in restaurants, never in pubs or chippies. Most places take cards; a few old caffs and Sam Smith’s pubs are cash-only. Vegan and gluten-free options are marked on almost every London menu – just ask. The airport shops sell the same tea tins and biscuits at 2–3 times the supermarket price, so buy souvenirs in town.

## EU Entry/Exit System (EES): what travellers ask

### My flight home might land late because of EES queues. What happens to my transfer?

Give your flight number when you book, so the driver can follow the actual landing time rather than the scheduled one.

### Will I go through EES at Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted?

No. UK airports do not run EES. When you fly to a Schengen country, you register on arrival at the European airport, and your exit is recorded when you fly home.

### Do children have to register for EES?

Yes, every non-EU traveller gets a record, babies included. Children under 12 are photographed but not fingerprinted.

### Do I need ETIAS as well?

Not yet. ETIAS, the EU's separate online travel authorisation, has not launched, so there is nothing to apply for. The EU will announce a start date months in advance; until then, avoid websites that charge for it.

EES is the EU's digital border check for non-EU travellers, fully in use since April 2026. It is not a visa. Checked September 2026; rules can change, so see the [EU Travel to Europe site](https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees) before you travel.
