Paddington has the Heathrow Express, but nothing direct to Gatwick. By rail you need the Circle or Bakerloo line to Victoria and then the Gatwick Express, which means carrying luggage through two busy stations.
By car the driver heads down Park Lane, crosses the river at Vauxhall and takes the A23 to the M23. It is one fixed price whether central London is clear or crawling.
By public transport: Tube to Victoria, then Gatwick Express, about 60–80 min. The catch is a Tube change with luggage at Victoria, one of London's busiest stations. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 70 min, or 105 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Paddington (W2) the route runs down Park Lane and over Vauxhall Bridge to the A23 and M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and A23 north, over the river and up Park Lane to W2. That is about 31 miles: reckon 70 min off-peak and 105 min when Park Lane, Vauxhall and the A23 at Streatham is busy.
