By rail it is the Northern line from East Finchley to Bank and the DLR to the airport.
By public transport: Northern line to Bank, then the DLR, about 50–60 min. The catch is a change at Bank with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 45 min, or 70 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of East Finchley (N2) the route runs down the Archway and Holloway Roads, through Highbury to City Road and the Limehouse Link. Coming back from London City the driver follows the A13 and Limehouse Link, City Road and Holloway back to East Finchley. That is about 15 miles: reckon 45 min off-peak and 70 min when Holloway Road and City Road is busy.

East Finchley runs along the High Road from Highgate towards Finchley, with the Phoenix Cinema, independent shops, and streets of Edwardian houses between Cherry Tree Wood, Hampstead Garden Suburb and Fortis Green.
The High Road is busy with buses near the station, so for flats on it the driver may wait in a side street and call when outside.
