West Hampstead Thameslink has direct trains to Luton Airport Parkway, where the DART shuttle takes you to the terminal. It is a good route for one person with light bags.
By public transport: Bus to West Hampstead, Thameslink to Luton Airport Parkway, then the DART, about 50–65 min. The catch is three legs with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 40 min, or 65 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Hampstead (NW3) the route runs up the Finchley Road to the M1 at Hendon. Coming back from Luton the driver follows the M1 south to Hendon and the Finchley Road back to NW3. That is about 28 miles: reckon 40 min off-peak and 65 min when the Finchley Road and Brent Cross is busy.
