By public transport: Central line to Bank, then the DLR, about 25–35 min. The catch is the long interchange at Bank. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 20 min, or 40 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Liverpool Street (EC2M) the route runs through Aldgate and along the Highway to the Limehouse Link and Silvertown. Coming back from London City the driver follows the Limehouse Link, the Highway and Aldgate back to Liverpool Street. That is about 7 miles: reckon 20 min off-peak and 40 min when Aldgate and the Highway is busy.
