The driver either takes the A406 east to the M11, or joins the M25 at junction 24 and runs round to junction 27. Both are quick, and the choice depends on traffic.
By train it is the Piccadilly line to Finsbury Park or central London and then the Stansted Express, which means a change with luggage.
By public transport: Tube to Tottenham Hale or Liverpool Street, then the Stansted Express, about 70–100 min. The catch is at least one change, and fares add up for a family. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 40 min, or 60 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Southgate (N14 / N21) the route runs the A406 east to the M11, or the M25 from junction 24 to junction 27. Coming back from Stansted the driver follows M11 south and the A406 or M25 back to Southgate. That is about 30 miles: reckon 40 min off-peak and 60 min when the A406 at Waterworks Corner is busy.
Stansted has one terminal. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board once you have cleared baggage reclaim.
