The driver joins the M25 at junction 24 and runs round to the M23, either clockwise via Dartford or anticlockwise past Heathrow, depending on traffic.
By train it is the Piccadilly line into central London and then Thameslink or the Gatwick Express.
By public transport: Train from Southgate (Piccadilly line) into central London, then Gatwick Express or Thameslink, about 90–120 min. The catch is two or three changes and a cross-London transfer with cases. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 65 min, or 100 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Southgate (N14 / N21) the route runs the M25 from junction 24 clockwise to the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows M23 north and the M25 anticlockwise to junction 24. That is about 50 miles: reckon 65 min off-peak and 100 min when the M25 through Dartford or round the west is busy.
