By rail you take a South Western train from Putney to Clapham Junction and change for a Southern train to Gatwick. It is quick for one person, but Clapham Junction's stairs are hard with heavy cases.
By car the driver heads through Wandsworth and Tooting to the A23 and follows the M23 to your terminal.
By public transport: Train to Clapham Junction, then Southern to Gatwick, about 45–60 min. The catch is a change at Clapham Junction with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 55 min, or 85 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Putney (SW15) the route runs through Wandsworth and Tooting to the A23 and the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and A23 north, then Tooting and Wandsworth back to Putney. That is about 25 miles: reckon 55 min off-peak and 85 min when Tooting and Streatham is busy.
