The driver takes the A40 out to the M25 and follows it south to the M23 for Gatwick. It avoids crossing central and south London.
By rail it is Southern from Wembley Central to Clapham Junction or East Croydon, then a fast train to Gatwick.
By public transport: Southern from Wembley Central, changing at Clapham Junction or East Croydon, about 75–90 min. The catch is a change with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 65 min, or 100 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Wembley (HA9 / HA0) the route runs out on the A40 to the M25, then south round the M25 to the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23, the M25 and the A40 back to Wembley. That is about 45 miles: reckon 65 min off-peak and 100 min when the M25 and the A40 at Hanger Lane is busy.
