By rail it is the District line to Victoria and then the Gatwick Express. Victoria is one of London's busiest stations, which is the hard part with luggage.
By car the driver crosses the river at Putney Bridge, heads through Wandsworth and Tooting and joins the A23 and M23. Hammersmith Bridge has had long closures to cars, so Putney is the usual crossing.
By public transport: District line to Victoria, then the Gatwick Express, about 55–70 min. The catch is Victoria station with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 60 min, or 90 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Hammersmith (W6) the route runs over Putney Bridge, through Wandsworth and Tooting to the A23 and M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and A23 north, then Tooting, Wandsworth and Putney Bridge back to W6. That is about 28 miles: reckon 60 min off-peak and 90 min when Putney Bridge, Wandsworth and Streatham is busy.
