West Hampstead Thameslink, a short bus ride away, has trains that run through central London to Gatwick. It avoids the Tube, but the trains are busy and the journey still starts with a bus or walk.
By car the driver heads south through Swiss Cottage and Regent's Park, down Park Lane, over Vauxhall Bridge and on to the A23 and M23.
By public transport: Bus to West Hampstead, then Thameslink to Gatwick, about 65–85 min. The catch is a bus first and busy commuter trains with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 80 min, or 115 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Hampstead (NW3) the route runs south through Swiss Cottage and Regent's Park, down Park Lane, over Vauxhall Bridge and along the A23 to the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and A23 north, Vauxhall Bridge, Park Lane and the Finchley Road back to Hampstead. That is about 34 miles: reckon 80 min off-peak and 115 min when the West End, Vauxhall and Streatham is busy.
