By rail you take the District or Circle line to Victoria and then the Gatwick Express. Victoria is two stops away, but the station itself is crowded and hard work with cases.
By car the driver crosses at Albert or Battersea Bridge, heads through Clapham and joins the A23 and M23.
By public transport: District or Circle line to Victoria, then the Gatwick Express, about 50–65 min. The catch is Victoria station with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 65 min, or 100 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of South Kensington (SW7) the route runs south over Albert or Battersea Bridge, through Clapham and down the A23 to the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and A23 north, Clapham and the river crossing back to South Kensington. That is about 27 miles: reckon 65 min off-peak and 100 min when the river crossing and Streatham is busy.
