By rail you can take the tram from Wimbledon to East Croydon and then a direct train to Gatwick, or a train to Clapham Junction and change there. Both mean a change with luggage.
By car the driver heads south on the A24 and A217 to the M25 and round to the M23, which keeps the trip out of London's traffic.
By public transport: Tram to East Croydon, then a direct train to Gatwick, about 50–65 min. The catch is a tram and a train with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 45 min, or 70 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Wimbledon (SW19) the route runs south on the A24 and A217 to the M25, then round to the M23 and Gatwick. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and M25, then the A217 and A24 back to Wimbledon. That is about 22 miles: reckon 45 min off-peak and 70 min when the A24 through Morden and the A217 is busy.

Wimbledon runs from the Village on the hill, with its boutiques and large family houses, down to the town centre on The Broadway and the busy station. The All England Club and Wimbledon Park lie to the north, and the Common stretches west towards Putney and Kingston.
