By public transport: Northern line to London Bridge, then Thameslink to Gatwick, about 90–105 min. The catch is a very long Tube ride and a change. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 65 min, or 95 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Whetstone (N20) the route runs up to the M25 at South Mimms and round the western M25 to the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and the western M25 back to South Mimms and Whetstone.
