By rail the usual route is the Northern line into town and then the Elizabeth line or Piccadilly line out to Heathrow. Hampstead station is the deepest on the Underground and relies on lifts, which is worth knowing with heavy cases.
By car the driver goes down the Finchley Road, round the North Circular to the A40 and out to the airport, without going into central London.
By public transport: Northern line to Tottenham Court Road, then the Elizabeth line to Heathrow, about 55–70 min. The catch is a very deep station at Hampstead and a change with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 40 min, or 70 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Hampstead (NW3) the route runs down the Finchley Road to the North Circular, west to the A40 and out on the A312 or M4. Coming back from Heathrow the driver follows the M4 or A312, the A40 and North Circular, then the Finchley Road back to NW3. That is about 17 miles: reckon 40 min off-peak and 70 min when the North Circular around Hanger Lane is busy.
