By public transport: Southern from Purley, sometimes changing at East Croydon, about 25–40 min. The catch is a possible change with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 20 min, or 35 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Purley (CR8) the route runs straight down the A23 and the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and the A23 back to Purley. That is about 13 miles: reckon 20 min off-peak and 35 min when Coulsdon and the A23 approach to the M23 is busy.
