The driver heads north through the City and up the A12 to the M11, or east through the Blackwall Tunnel when the centre is busy. Either way you stay in one car from your front door.
By rail it is the Northern line into the City, a walk to Liverpool Street and the Stansted Express. It works for one person, but not easily with a family.
By public transport: Northern line to Bank, walk to Liverpool Street, then Stansted Express, about 80–100 min. The catch is a Tube, a walk and a train with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 75 min, or 110 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Clapham (SW4 / SW11) the route runs through the City and up the A12 to the M11, or east through the Blackwall Tunnel. Coming back from Stansted the driver follows the M11 and A12 back through the City to SW4. That is about 42 miles: reckon 75 min off-peak and 110 min when central London and the A12 is busy.
