The route from central London is the A24 south to Ewell, then the B290 and Epsom Downs Road up onto the Downs. On an ordinary day that is about 50 min.
On a feature day it is a different journey. The problem is the climb up to the Downs on Derby Day, when the hill traffic stops entirely. That is why we set the pickup from the first race rather than from the gates, and why leaving an hour earlier than feels necessary is the right call.
The drop is the drop-off at the Queen's Stand entrance, rather than the general car parks spread across the Downs. The pickup afterwards uses the same point, and your driver is in position before the last race finishes rather than setting off once you call.
Derby Day and Ladies' Day at the start of June are the two fixtures that sell out, with evening meetings through the summer.
The course car parks fill from early morning and empty slowly. The walk in from the outer fields is long and usually across grass. Add the drive home after a day at the races, which is the part nobody plans for, and the case for a car with a driver makes itself.
