By public transport: Train to King's Cross, then Thameslink from St Pancras and the DART, about 65–85 min. The catch is at least one change with bags, and early flights before the first train. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 25 min, or 40 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Hatfield (AL9 / AL10) the route runs west on the A1057 to St Albans, then north on the A1081 through Harpenden to the airport. Coming back from Luton the driver follows the A1081 and the A1057 back to Hatfield. That is about 15 miles: reckon 25 min off-peak and 40 min when Harpenden is busy.
