Lord's is the one ground where the journey really does set the tone for the day. Play at the Home of Cricket starts early, the gates in St John's Wood shut tighter than at most venues, and the streets around NW8 are residents-only for most of the day. For a first session starting at 11:00 we build in a match-day buffer and aim to have you at the gate by 10:15, which leaves time for bag checks and finding your seat before play.Lord's has been on its present site since 1814, and the ground still behaves like the private members' club it grew out of. It holds around 30,000, which is small by football standards but produces a very particular kind of congestion: almost everyone arrives inside the same forty-minute window before the first ball, on foot, through a handful of gates set into residential streets. The famous Grace Gates on St John's Wood Road are the main public entrance, with the North Gate on Wellington Road and the East Gate on Grove End Road taking the rest. None of them is a stadium concourse. They are gates in a wall on ordinary streets, and the streets fill up fast.
That is the reason a private car is worth more here than at a big out-of-town ground. There is no stadium car park at Lord's for general spectators, and the whole of St John's Wood sits inside a controlled parking zone that runs through match days. Anyone who drives themselves ends up circling Maida Vale looking for a bay, or paying a small fortune in a private garage, and then walking in anyway. A drop-off solves it: the car comes in, you step out within a short walk of your gate, and the car leaves. Nothing to park, nothing to retrieve at the end of a long day in the sun.
Lord's is also unusual in being a genuine tourist destination on days when no cricket is played at all. The MCC Museum, the Long Room, the honours boards and the tours of the pavilion draw visitors year-round, and the ground hosts conferences, dinners and weddings in the Nursery Pavilion and the Thomas Lord Suite. Those bookings arrive on a different rhythm — smaller groups, tighter timings, more luggage — and are just as easy to cover from Heathrow. If you are coming in for a tour slot or a function rather than a match, tell us the time on the ticket and we work backwards from it.
The nearest station is St John's Wood on the Jubilee line, a few minutes' walk from the Grace Gates and completely overwhelmed for an hour after a full house. Marylebone and Baker Street are both walkable in around fifteen to twenty minutes and are far more pleasant on the way out; Maida Vale and Warwick Avenue on the Bakerloo line are an easy alternative from the west. Several bus routes run along Wellington Road and Park Road. None of that matters much on the way in if you have a car; all of it matters on the way out if you do not.
For drop-off we work to three points depending on how tightly the ground is stewarded that day. St John's Wood Road puts you closest to the Grace Gates and the main public entrance. Wellington Road serves the North Gate and is the better choice when the southern side is closed. Grove End Road covers the East Gate and tends to stay clear longest. On non-match days and for tours, we can usually pull up directly outside the gate you need.
Access is good but the ground is old, and the routes to some stands involve steps and narrow passages. Accessible seating, lifts and step-free routes exist and should be arranged with the MCC in advance through your ticket. For the car side of it, tell us what you need — a drop as close to a specific gate as stewards permit, extra time to get out of the vehicle, space for a folding wheelchair — and we allocate a suitable car rather than sending whatever is nearest. Regent's Park and Primrose Hill are both a short walk away if you have arrived early and want somewhere to sit before the gates open.
Cricket schedules are published months ahead, which makes this one of the easiest venues to plan around. The pattern below covers almost everything that happens at Lord's in a normal summer, and each format implies a different pick-up time from Heathrow.
We track your flight from the moment it leaves its origin airport, so the pick-up time adjusts itself if you are early or late. Your driver parks and walks into the terminal, and is waiting in the arrivals hall with a name board before you clear customs. There is nothing to find, no kerbside phone call and no meter running while you queue at passport control. The 60 minutes of free waiting starts when the wheels touch down, not when you booked.
Bags into the boot and you are moving inside a few minutes. From Terminals 2 and 3 we are on the spur road and onto the M4 almost immediately; from Terminal 5 it is a short run round the western perimeter first; from Terminal 4 we come up the southern side and join the same corridor. The M4 into the A4 is the default, and on a quiet morning it carries you most of the way to Hammersmith without a stop.
This is the part where local knowledge earns its keep. On a clear run we come in through Chiswick and Hammersmith and up through Paddington to the Marylebone Road. When the A4 is loaded — roadworks at Hammersmith, an incident on the flyover, the school-run hour — we go over the top instead, out on the A40 Westway and down through Maida Vale into St John's Wood from the north. Both arrive at the same gates; the difference on a bad morning can be twenty-five minutes.
St John's Wood Road runs right past the Grace Gates, and on quiet days we can put you down within sight of them. On a full Test or ODI day the road immediately outside is stewarded and closed to through traffic for an hour or so before play, so we drop at the nearest clear point — typically on Wellington Road near the North Gate, on Grove End Road, or at the top of Lisson Grove — and you walk the last two or three minutes. The driver will tell you which gate you are closest to before you get out.
The end of a day at Lord's empties 30,000 people into residential streets that have almost no taxi rank capacity, and St John's Wood tube takes the strain badly. Pre-book the return and we agree a pick-up point away from the immediate crush — a street corner a few minutes' walk out, or a named side road — so you are in a car and moving while the queue at the station is still forming. For Tests we can also hold a car for the close of play with a flexible window, because nobody knows exactly when the last over will be bowled.
If you are flying in on the morning of play, book the earliest realistic flight rather than the one that lands at 09:30. A 45-minute drive can become 75 minutes on a wet Thursday, and the first session at Lord's is the one you least want to miss.There are cheaper ways to get from Heathrow to St John's Wood. There is no simpler one, and on a match day simple is worth paying for.
Heathrow is the closest and busiest airport for Lord's, but it is far from the only way in. Gatwick is about 35 miles south and typically 70–90 minutes to NW8; London City is much closer at roughly 12 miles but the run crosses the whole of central London and is heavily traffic-dependent; Luton at around 32 miles north and Stansted at around 40 miles north-east both come in down the M1 or M11 and can actually be quicker than Gatwick outside rush hour. We quote all of them on the same fixed basis.
Arriving by cruise or from another city?
