Cheapest hotels of the year, empty museums, five weeks of Christmas lights and the best theatre season. Here is how to fill a short winter day, and how to get in from the airport when it is dark by four.

Between November and February London is at its cheapest and least crowded, and from mid November to early January it is also at its most spectacular. The trick is to plan around the light. Sunset is before 16:00 in December, so put the outdoor things in the morning and the lights, shows and long dinners in the afternoon and evening.
Mornings
Outdoor London on a cold, bright morning
Park walks: Richmond Park for the deer (best at dawn in the rut season and on frosty mornings), Greenwich Park for the view down to the river, Primrose Hill for the skyline, Regent's Park for the Japanese Garden and Victoria Park's 2.7-mile loop with a café at the end.
Markets: Borough Market is mostly under cover and busiest on Saturdays; a guided food tour there is one of the best wet-weather activities in the city. Columbia Road flower market on Sunday mornings is at its most festive in December.
Walking tours: winter is the season for the East End and the City, when the streets are empty and the pubs are warm. Choose a tour that ends near a pub with a fire.
One warning that catches visitors every year: there is no public transport in London on Christmas Day. No Tube, no buses, no trains except a reduced Heathrow Express. If you are flying on 25 or 26 December, pre-book your transfer; we run a normal service at the normal fixed price.

Museums: the big national museums are free and, from January to March, almost empty on weekday mornings. Theatre: the West End's busiest season. January is the best month for walk-up and day-seat tickets.
Pubs: a Sunday roast in a pub with a fire is a legitimate afternoon plan. Guided historic pub walks with food and beer tastings combine the walk and the warmth.
Making things: BYOB craft classes in Borough (macramé, printing, festive wreaths) are a good rainy-afternoon option for groups.

Getting around in the dark and the wet
Pack a proper coat, waterproof boots with grip and a power bank; cold cuts phone battery noticeably. Use a contactless card for the Tube (the Zone 1 to 2 daily cap is £8.90) and avoid the midweek morning peak, which is now concentrated on Tuesday to Thursday between 08:00 and 08:30.
