By rail the Overground runs from Dalston Junction to Clapham Junction, where Southern trains leave for Gatwick.

A car does the whole trip door to door in about 75 min, or 110 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Dalston (E8) the route runs south through Shoreditch and over Tower Bridge, then the Old Kent Road, Brixton and Streatham to the A23 and M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and A23 north, then Brixton, Tower Bridge and Shoreditch back to Dalston. That is about 30 miles: reckon 75 min off-peak and 110 min when Shoreditch, Tower Bridge and Brixton is busy.
