By public transport: Train to Waterloo, then the Tube to Victoria and the Gatwick Express, about 90–110 min. The catch is the change in London and the walk with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 35 min, or 55 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Egham (TW20) the route runs onto the M25 at junction 13 and south to junction 7, then down the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and the M25 back to Egham. That is about 30 miles: reckon 35 min off-peak and 55 min when the M25 between junctions 7 and 12 is busy.
