By public transport: Metropolitan line to King's Cross St Pancras, Thameslink, then the DART, about 90–105 min. The catch is going into London and back out. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 30 min, or 50 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Pinner (HA5) the route runs through Hatch End and Bushey to the M1 and north to the airport. Coming back from Luton the driver follows the M1, Bushey and Hatch End back to Pinner. That is about 22 miles: reckon 30 min off-peak and 50 min when Bushey and the M1 junctions is busy.
