The Finchley Road runs right through Swiss Cottage and leads straight to the M1 at Hendon, so the trip to Luton is almost all on one road.
By rail it is the Jubilee line two stops to West Hampstead, a short walk to the Thameslink station, then Thameslink to Luton Airport Parkway and the DART.
By public transport: Jubilee line to West Hampstead, Thameslink to Luton Airport Parkway, then the DART, about 50–65 min. The catch is a walk between the West Hampstead stations and the DART. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 40 min, or 60 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Swiss Cottage (NW3 / NW6) the route runs straight up the Finchley Road to the M1 at Hendon. Coming back from Luton the driver follows the M1 south to Hendon and down the Finchley Road. That is about 27 miles: reckon 40 min off-peak and 60 min when the Finchley Road and Brent Cross is busy.
