By public transport: Jubilee line to Canning Town, then the DLR, about 25–35 min. The catch is a change at Canning Town. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 20 min, or 35 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Bermondsey (SE1 / SE16) the route runs through the Rotherhithe Tunnel and along the A13 to Silvertown. Coming back from London City the driver follows the A13 and the Rotherhithe Tunnel back to Bermondsey. That is about 6 miles: reckon 20 min off-peak and 35 min when the Rotherhithe Tunnel approaches is busy.

Bermondsey runs from the restaurants and galleries of Bermondsey Street and the warehouse flats of Shad Thames to the streets around Southwark Park, with Maltby Street Market under the railway arches and the Jubilee line at its centre.
