The public-transport version starts at Finchley Central (the Northern line) and finishes at Alexandra Palace (National Rail), with a 20-minute walk at the far end. The catch is that it is a steep uphill walk unless you wait for the shuttle. A car does the whole thing door to door in about 15 min, or 30 min when the roads are full - and it does it with your bags in the boot. It is a fair fight on the way there. On the way back, when several thousand people want the same platform, it stops being one.
From the N2, N3, N12 streets the route runs via the A1 then the A406 then the A598, finishing on A406 North Circular, then Bounds Green Road. That is about 4.7 miles. Reckon 15 min off-peak and 30 min if you are crossing town at the wrong moment.
