By rail you would go Walthamstow Central (the Victoria line and London Overground) across to Charlton (National Rail), then a 6-minute walk at the far end. The catch is that it is a limited service, and weekend engineering works are common. A car does the whole thing door to door in about 30 min, or 50 min when the roads are full - and it does it with your bags in the boot. If you are travelling light and early, the train usually wins on price. If you are in a group, carrying anything, or leaving after an event, the car wins on everything else.
The usual line from Walthamstow is the A406 then the A112 then the A503, then A102 then A206 Woolwich Road at the end. Roughly 10.5 miles, and the timing swings with the hour rather than the route: 30 min clear, 50 min loaded.

If you were thinking of driving yourself: The Valley sits inside a matchday or event-day controlled parking zone, on-site spaces are pre-book only and go early, and the residential streets around it are permit-holders only with active enforcement. Being dropped at the door and collected at an agreed point removes the whole problem.
Doors are usually an hour before the match. Working back, that means leaving Walthamstow around 50 min plus that hour on a busy night - and booking the return at the same time, because the road out is slower than the road in.
