By rail it is the Elizabeth line from Tottenham Court Road to Custom House and two stops on the DLR. Quick for one person; with cases or a group, the car is simpler.
By public transport: Elizabeth line from Tottenham Court Road to Custom House, then the DLR, about 35–45 min. The catch is a change at Custom House. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 30 min, or 55 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Covent Garden (WC2) the route runs along the Strand and Fleet Street, through the City and down the Limehouse Link. Coming back from London City the driver follows the A13 and Limehouse Link, then the City and Fleet Street back to WC2. That is about 9 miles: reckon 30 min off-peak and 55 min when Fleet Street and the City is busy.
