By rail you would take the Jubilee line to London Bridge and then Thameslink to Gatwick. It is one change, but London Bridge is busy at peak times.
By car the driver goes south through the Blackwall Tunnel, down the A2 to the M25 and round to the M23, avoiding central London.

Out of Stratford (E15 / E20) the route runs south through the Blackwall Tunnel and down the A2 to the M25, then round to the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and M25, the A2 and the Blackwall Tunnel back to Stratford. That is about 33 miles: reckon 65 min off-peak and 100 min when the Blackwall Tunnel approaches is busy.
