The driver heads up the A10 to the M25 and round to the M1, or west on the A406 to Brent Cross. Both routes avoid central London.
By train it is the Overground to Highbury, the Victoria line to St Pancras, Thameslink to Luton Airport Parkway and then the DART, which is four legs with luggage.
By public transport: Train to St Pancras or West Hampstead, Thameslink to Luton Airport Parkway, then the DART, about 80–110 min. The catch is three separate legs and the DART shuttle at the end. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 55 min, or 85 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Clapton (E5) the route runs up the A10 to the M25 and round to the M1, or west on the A406. Coming back from Luton the driver follows M1 south and the M25 or A406 back to Clapton. That is about 35 miles: reckon 55 min off-peak and 85 min when the M25 and A406 is busy.
