On the network it is East Croydon (Southern, Thameslink and the Gatwick Express) to Custom House (Elizabeth line and the DLR), plus a 5-minute walk at the far end. The catch is that it is fine with one bag and awkward if you are carrying exhibition kit. A car does the whole thing door to door in about 35 min, or 1h when the roads are full - and it does it with your bags in the boot. Two people with hand luggage should take the train. Three or more, or anyone with a case, and the fixed fare splits better than the tickets do.
From the CR0, CR2, CR3, CR4, CR5, CR7, CR8, SE19, SE25 streets the route runs via the A23 then the A232 then the A212, finishing on A13 then Connaught Bridge and Western Gateway. That is about 15.2 miles. Reckon 35 min off-peak and 1h if you are crossing town at the wrong moment.

Parking at ExCeL London is limited and the surrounding streets are metered or permit-only, so self-driving usually costs more in time than the fare saves. Pre-booked both ways, none of that is your problem.
