By rail it is the Northern line into central London and then the Elizabeth line or Piccadilly line west to Heathrow, with a change and a long ride.
By car the driver heads west on the North Circular, joins the A40 and follows it out to the airport, never going near central London.
By public transport: Northern line to Tottenham Court Road, then the Elizabeth line to Heathrow, about 65–80 min. The catch is a change in central London with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 50 min, or 80 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Highgate (N6) the route runs west along the North Circular to the A40, then the A312 or M4 to Heathrow. Coming back from Heathrow the driver follows the M4 or A312, the A40 and the North Circular back to N6. That is about 20 miles: reckon 50 min off-peak and 80 min when the North Circular between Finchley and Hanger Lane is busy.
