The driver joins the A406 North Circular and heads west to Hanger Lane, the A40 and the M4. At off-peak times the M1 and M25 are a good alternative.
By Tube it is the Northern line into central London and then the Piccadilly or Elizabeth line out west, with at least one change.

The catch is at least one change, stairs and crowded trains with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 40 min, or 75 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Finchley (N3 / N2 / N12) the route runs west on the A406 North Circular to the A40 and M4, or up to the M25 at off-peak times. Coming back from Heathrow the driver follows M4 and A40, then the A406 back to Finchley. That is about 17 miles: reckon 40 min off-peak and 75 min when the A406 at Hanger Lane is busy.
