By rail you would take the District or Circle line to Victoria and then the Gatwick Express. Victoria's concourse and ticket barriers are hard work with suitcases, especially on a Friday evening.
The driver instead heads south through Earl's Court, crosses Battersea Bridge and follows the A23 through Clapham and Streatham to the M23.
By public transport: District or Circle line to Victoria, then the Gatwick Express, about 60–75 min. The catch is a Tube ride and Victoria station with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 65 min, or 100 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Kensington (W8) the route runs south through Earl's Court, over Battersea Bridge and down through Clapham and Streatham to the A23 and M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23 and A23 north, then Battersea Bridge back to Kensington. That is about 27 miles: reckon 65 min off-peak and 100 min when the river crossing and the A23 at Streatham is busy.
