On the way back, when several thousand people want the same platform, it stops being one.

Driving yourself to Sandown Park Racecourse means joining the same single-file exit as everyone else, and the car parks empty in one slow wave rather than continuously. Being dropped at the door and collected at an agreed point removes the whole problem.
Gates open well before the first race and the roads in are single-file near the course. Leaving Sutton about 40 min ahead of when you want to be through the turnstile is the timing that holds up.
