By rail you would go Twickenham (South Western Railway) across to Esher (National Rail), then a 8-minute walk at the far end. The catch is that it is a short walk but a thin evening service. A car does the whole thing door to door in about 25 min, or 35 min when the roads are full - and it does it with your bags in the boot. If you are travelling light and early, the train usually wins on price. If you are in a group, carrying anything, or leaving after an event, the car wins on everything else.
The usual line from Twickenham is the A316 then the A305 then the A310, then M25 J10, then A3 and A307 Portsmouth Road at the end. Roughly 8.2 miles, and the timing swings with the hour rather than the route: 25 min clear, 35 min loaded.
Twickenham pickups take in all of TW1, TW2. Controlled parking zones and one-way systems are the driver's problem to solve, not yours.

Your driver sends the exact standing point and the registration before they set off, so you are not circling a car park looking for a number plate.

Driving yourself to Sandown Park Racecourse means joining the same single-file exit as everyone else, and the car parks empty in one slow wave rather than continuously. A drop-off and a booked return sidesteps it entirely.
Gates open well before the first race and the roads in are single-file near the course. Leaving Twickenham about 35 min ahead of when you want to be through the turnstile is the timing that holds up.
