By rail you would take a train from Chiswick to Clapham Junction and change for Gatwick, or go into Victoria for the Gatwick Express. Both mean a change and a busy station.
By car the driver crosses Chiswick Bridge, takes the A316 to the M3 and follows the M25 round to the M23. It is longer in miles than going through south London, but usually quicker.
By public transport: Train to Clapham Junction, then Southern to Gatwick, about 60–75 min. The catch is a change at Clapham Junction with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 55 min, or 85 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Chiswick (W4) the route runs over Chiswick Bridge and via the A316 and M3 to the M25, then round to the M23. Coming back from Gatwick the driver follows the M23, M25 and M3, then the A316 and Chiswick Bridge back to W4. That is about 38 miles: reckon 55 min off-peak and 85 min when the M25 between the M3 and M23 is busy.
