By public transport: Piccadilly line to King's Cross St Pancras, Thameslink, then the DART, about 90–105 min. The catch is going into London and back out. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 30 min, or 50 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Cockfosters (EN4) the route runs onto the M25 at junction 24 and west to the M1, then north. Coming back from Luton the driver follows the M1 and the M25 back to Cockfosters. That is about 22 miles: reckon 30 min off-peak and 50 min when the M25 between the A1(M) and the M1 is busy.
