Taxi or train from Whitechapel?

The public-transport version starts at Whitechapel (District, Elizabeth and the Overground) and finishes at Stratford (Central, Jubilee, Elizabeth and the DLR), with a 18-minute walk at the far end. The catch is that the walk across the park is long and fully exposed to weather. A car does the whole thing door to door in about 15 min, or 30 min when the roads are full - and it does it with your bags in the boot. If you are travelling light and early, the train usually wins on price. If you are in a group, carrying anything, or leaving after an event, the car wins on everything else.

The route

Out of Whitechapel (E1) the driver picks up the A11 then the A1202, joining A12 Blackwall Tunnel Northern Approach, then Warton Road for the run-in. That is about 4.2 miles. Reckon 15 min off-peak and 30 min if you are crossing town at the wrong moment.

Any address across Whitechapel works, E1 included, at whatever hour the East London traffic is doing its worst.

Where the driver waits at London Stadium

Pudding Mill Lane is the quickest private hire pickup; the Stratford side jams solid after events. The Olympic Park bridges are pedestrian-only on event days, so pickup is on the Pudding Mill Lane side rather than Westfield. Your driver sends the exact standing point and the registration before they set off, so you are not circling a car park looking for a number plate.

Address: Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, E20 2ST.

Parking at London Stadium

If you were thinking of driving yourself: London Stadium sits inside a matchday or event-day controlled parking zone, on-site spaces are pre-book only and go early, and the residential streets around it are permit-holders only with active enforcement. Pre-booked both ways, none of that is your problem.

When to leave Whitechapel

Doors are usually an hour before the match. Working back, that means leaving Whitechapel around 30 min plus that hour on a busy night - and booking the return at the same time, because the road out is slower than the road in.

What the fare includes
