The direct route is down the A10 through Hackney and the City, over the river and south on the A23 to the M23. When central London is heavy, the driver uses the M25 instead. You pay the same fixed fare either way.
By train it is the Victoria line to Victoria and the Gatwick Express, or the Overground to Thameslink, which is manageable alone but a challenge with children and cases.

The catch is two or three changes and a cross-London transfer with cases. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 75 min, or 110 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
