By public transport: Metropolitan line to King's Cross St Pancras, Thameslink, then the DART, about 95–110 min. The catch is going into London and back out. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 35 min, or 55 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Uxbridge (UB8 / UB10) the route runs onto the M25 and round to the M1 at junction 21, then north. Coming back from Luton the driver follows the M1 and the M25 back to Uxbridge. That is about 30 miles: reckon 35 min off-peak and 55 min when the M25 between the M40 and the M1 is busy.
