By rail you would travel to King's Cross St Pancras, via Victoria and the Victoria line, then take Thameslink to Luton Airport Parkway and the DART shuttle to the terminal.

The catch is four stages and two changes with luggage. A car does the whole trip door to door in about 60 min, or 90 min when the roads are full, with your bags in the boot.
Out of Chelsea (SW3 / SW10) the route runs north through Earl's Court and Shepherd's Bush to the A40, then the North Circular to the M1. Coming back from Luton the driver follows the M1 and North Circular, then the A40 and Earl's Court back to Chelsea. That is about 35 miles: reckon 60 min off-peak and 90 min when the North Circular between Hanger Lane and Staples Corner is busy.
